Safeway Launches Major Recycling Effort for Plastic Bags

Safeway, a charter member of Colorado Recycles and a member of the Board of Directors, has initiated a major program to recycle plastic grocery bags. This effort is part of a larger corporate commitment to numerous environmental efforts. Safeway is selling reusable bags made from recycled material for .99 cents. The bags are very popular and thousands have been purchased by consumers since Safeway launched the affordable bags six months ago.

In addition, Safeway is offering a 5 cent rebate for each plastic grocery bag brought in by consumers. The program is in place in all 122 Colorado Safeway stores, and the receptacles are very easy to spot as you enter the store. The bags go to TREX, for plastic fencing and other recycled plastic materials.

City of Aurora E-Cycling Event May 17

The City of Aurora will be sponsoring an ecycling event on Saturday, May 17th, 9:00- 2:00 at 15700 East 32nd Avenue in Aurora, CO. The event is open to Aurora residents only. All electronics are free except for monitors ($8 each) and televisions ($1/ inch measured diagonally across the screen). For more information, please contact James L. Schrack, Aurora Environmental Program Supervisor, at 303-739-7555.

CFL Recycling at Ace Hardware Stores

Coloradans now can drop-off their used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) and mercury-containing thermostats for recycling at any Ace Hardware store in the state. The recycling program is a collaborative effort of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Xcel Energy, EnCana Oil & Gas (USA) Inc., Platte River Power Authority and Ace Hardware Stores in Colorado.

Bins are in place behind the counters of the 104 Colorado Ace Hardware stores so residents can recycle their used CFLs and thermostats. To prevent breakage, store employees will take bulbs and thermostats from residents and place them into the bins. When the bins are full, a store employee will ship them to be recycled. The entire CFL bin will be recycled – contents and container included – ensuring no mercury will escape.

The bulb-recycling program is for CFLs only, not fluorescent tubes, and is intended for residential use, not for businesses or the commercial industry.

We have added the location of each Colorado Ace Hardware store to our Recycling Guide. Please use the link in the Recycling Guide index for Fluorescent Lamps.

Douglas County - Household Hazardous Waste Dates for 2008

In 2008 there will be three separate Roundups in Douglas County:

* April 26, Parker Joint Services Center, 17801 East Plaza Dr.
* July 26, Shea Stadium, 3270 Redstone Park Circle, Highlands Ranch
* Sept. 20, Town of Castle Rock Utilities, 175 Kellogg Ct.

Paint products, motor oil, antifreeze, vehicle batteries, house and garden chemicals, fire extinguishers, fireworks, ammunition, mercury, propane tanks, and passenger vehicle and pickup truck tires will be accepted.

People do not have to get out of their vehicles as they drive through the Roundup, since volunteers help unload the materials. The events are offered free-of-charge to local residents, however, participants will be asked for a $20 contribution to help offset the high costs of hazardous waste disposal. Participants will be asked for a driver’s license, water bill, utility bill or phone bill as proof of residence.

The Roundups cannot accept waste from businesses, radioactive waste, smoke detectors, oil drums, asbestos, explosives stronger than fireworks, or any compressed gases other than propane.

Although leftover latex paint will be accepted at the Roundups, water-based latex paint can be safely and legally disposed of in regular household garbage if it is completely dried out. Mixing the paint with kitty litter, sand, dirt or concrete-mix will help speed the drying process. Leave the lids off of all paint cans so that waste haulers can see that the paint can is empty or that the paint is completely dry.

The Household Chemical Roundups are sponsored by Douglas County, Centennial Water and Sanitation District, Metro District of Highlands Ranch, Parker Water and Sanitation District, Plum Creek Wastewater Authority, the Town of Parker, and many other agencies and individuals. Individuals and groups interested in helping with any of these events should contact Greg McConnell at 720.322.1541.

For more information, visit www.tchd.org/householdchemical.htm or call the 24-hour Household Chemical Roundup Infoline at 303.846.6249.

The City of Lone Tree administers a separate household hazardous waste collection program, call 1.800.449.7587 for information.
